New Grad RN Careers

OU Health is a leading destination for new nurses because they recognize the strength of our programs, the level of challenges they will face and the collaborative and supportive environment we provide. Our goal is to get you started right through our Nurse Residency Program, then offer limitless opportunities to change and grow over the course of your nursing career.

OU Health Nurse Externship Program

The Nurse Extern program is designed specifically for nursing students between their junior and senior year of Nursing School. The paid program will provide Nurse Externs with rich experiences about the interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to care at OU Health. Nurse Externs will not only work in a primary care area with expert staff, but will also partner with other members of the healthcare team throughout the system to witness the power of teamwork to enhance patient care.

Nurse Externs will also network with mentors and leaders to guide them in exploring evidence‐based practices and current research findings and will provide professional presentations to healthcare team members.

In this program, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Perform basic patient care and work with a bedside mentor who will provide training and expertise to help prepare you for a professional career in nursing
  • Explore evidence-based practices and current research findings
  • Potentially have the opportunity to work with nurses in expanded or advance practice roles, such as Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, Pain Management Nurses or Case Managers
  • Provide presentations to healthcare team members

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Nursing student between the junior and senior year of an accredited baccalaureate nursing program
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0

OU Health Nurse Residency Program

OU Health’s Nurse Residency Program provides new graduate nurses with resources and rich experiences that will serve as a strong foundation for a successful nursing career. With guidance from a one-on-one preceptor and an OU Health Residency Coordinator, OU Health Nurse Residents are given the support necessary to successfully bridge the transition from student to practicing nurse. As the foundation of the residency program, we have adopted the evidence-based curriculum designed by Vizient and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). The program supports registered nurses at all levels of educational preparation who have graduated from an accredited nursing program (associate degree, diploma, bachelor degree), and includes:

  • Social networking and support
  • Ongoing continuing educational opportunities
  • Certification review programs
  • Involvement in interdisciplinary and collaborative programs
  • Research and evidence-based practice opportunities
  • Monthly nurse residency seminars
  • Mentor relationships to support professional development
  • Evidence-based projects, with time allotted within the seminars to gather project information
  • Opportunities to provide and evaluate care, incorporating evidence-based practice, research and quality data

The 12-month program contains ongoing, structured learning opportunities, a strong network of social support and mentoring, and preparation to obtain national certification in a chosen specialty area:

  • Med/Surg
  • Cardiovascular
  • Oncology
